Are you feeling overwhelmed by all the non-surgical options for your skincare concerns? Many of us have concerns about our skin, but we may not know the best options available to treat them. This guide has the answers you need.

Board-certified plastic surgeon and non-surgical skin treatment expert Dr. Anu Bajaj answers your questions about non-surgical skin resurfacing treatments like fractionated lasers, microneedling, and Sofwave to offer smoother, tighter, and more youthful skin with no downtime required!

Why Non-Surgical Treatments? Why Now?

Caring for our skin should be as routine and essential as brushing our teeth. This fact is something we know is important, but we often neglect our skin due to time constraints or cost, or we believe that it requires too much downtime.

The great news is that winter offers the perfect opportunity to refocus on our skin. With less sun exposure and a break from the usual social bustle, it’s an ideal time to give our skin the attention it deserves.

What are your specific skin concerns? At Bajaj Plastic Surgery, we offer personalized solutions for every need. Plus, based on your budget and preferred downtime, we can further customize your treatment plans.

Our treatment options include the ZO 3-step chemical peel, a more intensive 30% TCA peel, microneedling, Sofwave, and full facial resurfacing with fractionated CO2 laser.

ZO 3-Step Peel

The ZO 3-Step Peel consists of three main stages: exfoliation, acid application, and neutralization. First, a combination of salicylic acid, lactic acid, and retinol is used to exfoliate the skin. This is followed by the application of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and additional salicylic acid to penetrate deeper layers, enhancing skin rejuvenation. The final step involves applying a neutralizing cream to soothe and calm the skin. The entire process takes approximately 30 minutes, and peeling occurs over the next 4 to 7 days as the skin renews itself.

The ZO 3-Step Peel is a medium-depth peel that is good for most skin types. To optimize results and minimize the risk of complications, we recommend that patients pre-treat with retinol and hydroquinone for a minimum of 6 weeks before the peel.

Key Factors About the ZO 3-Step Peel

  • Treats pigmentation and texture concerns, including sun damage, melasma, uneven texture, and acne scars
  • Exfoliates and promotes new skin growth
  • Minimal downtime: 5 to 7 days of peeling
  • Best results after 3 sessions, scheduled 1 month apart

The 30% Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) Peel

We also offer a more dramatic chemical peel—the 30% Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) peel. This deep skin resurfacing peel is more aggressive and penetrates deeper into the dermis than the ZO 3-Step Peel . Typically, after cleansing the skin with alcohol, acetone is applied to de-grease the skin. Jessner’s solution is then used as a chemical exfoliant, followed by the TCA.

Once again, appropriate pretreatment is key for optimizing results. Patients will likely peel for 7 to 10 days, and the results will continue to evolve over the following weeks. In addition to the pre-treatment, using a barrier sunscreen is critical as well, particularly to minimize the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Key Factors About the 30% TCA Peel

  • Treats deep wrinkles, advanced sun damage, texture issues, acne scars, pigmentation,
  • Downtime: 7 to 10 days of peeling and redness for 1 to 2 weeks
  • Achieves dramatic rejuvenation with deeper penetration

Microneedling

Microneedling, known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that uses fine needles to create micro-injuries on the skin’s surface. These controlled injuries stimulate the body’s natural healing process, encouraging collagen and elastin production.

This treatment can improve a variety of skin concerns, including:

  • Improving skin texture and tone
  • Reducing fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improving the appearance of acne scars
  • Reducing sun damage
  • Minimizing pore size

Microneedling can also be used with different serums and products to enhance their absorption. As microneedling creates small channels in the skin, other products—such as exosomes, hyaluronic acid, serums, etc.—are better absorbed.

The procedure typically takes an hour. Your skin will be pink for 24 to 48 hours afterward. Avoid sun exposure and use a barrier sunscreen with a minimum of SPF30 for several weeks.

Key Factors About Microneedling

  • Treats acne scars, fine lines, rough texture
  • Tiny needles stimulate collagen
  • Best results after a series of 3 treatments, scheduled 1 month apart
  • Minimal downtime of 1 to 2 days

Sofwave

Sofwave is the newest tool in our toolbox. It uses high-frequency, non-ablative ultrasound energy to stimulate collagen production and tighten the skin. Sofwave can treat wrinkles, skin laxity, and fine lines on the face and neck.

With minimal downtime and no recovery, Sofwave is a safe and effective alternative to more invasive procedures like facelifts or laser treatments. The procedure takes about 1 to 2 hours and is safe for all skin types, making it unique among energy devices designed to tighten and firm the skin.

Sofwave treatment results will evolve over 3 to 4 months following the procedure. Our experts recommend Sofwave as a good tool for annual maintenance treatments after surgical rejuvenation procedures like facelifts.

Key Factors About Sofwave

  • Subtly tightens and lifts face and neck
  • Treats mild to moderate skin laxity, wrinkles, and fine lines
  • Ultrasound energy stimulates collagen
  • Results after 1 treatment with no downtime

Fractionated CO2 Laser

At Bajaj Plastic Surgery, we use the innovative and versatile AcuPulse CO2 laser system. AcuPulse CO2 is a highly effective tool that provides long-term results with minimal downtime. Without damaging the surrounding areas, the AcuPulse CO2 clears away discolored and damaged skin cells, leaving your skin looking refreshed, smoother, and more even.

With quick, powerful treatments, Dr. Bajaj can utilize AcuPulse CO2 to treat multiple skin concerns on many body parts, including the face, body, and even sensitive areas. AcuPulse CO2 is safe for a wide range of skin tones and complexions.

Key Factors About Fractionated CO2 Laser

  • Deep skin resurfacing
  • Treats severe wrinkles, advanced sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and scars
  • Minimal social downtime, including peeling, swelling, and redness for 1 to 2 weeks
  • Procedures performed under sedation
