What Is a Chemical Peel?
A chemical peel is a chemical solution that is placed on the skin to remove damaged surface layers and stimulate collagen regeneration. The non-surgical procedure can treat a wide range of skin issues because of its customizable formulations. Patients of all ages can benefit from treatment. Younger patients might undergo a light peel to reduce signs of acne, while more mature patients can reduce fine lines, wrinkles and rough skin texture.
Once the solution has been applied to the targeted skin, the chemicals will cause a “burning” effect. As skin heals, layers of skin will effectively peel off. With the removal of the damaged skin layers, the treatment area will appear smoother and vibrant with an even complexion.

Chemical Peel vs. Laser Treatments
The purpose of a chemical peel is to improve the texture of your skin by removing the damaged or dead layers of skin. There are skin resurfacing lasers that also treat damaged surface skin. This is done through specific radiofrequency or light therapies, which ablate and heat deep tissue to stimulate collagen production.

What Areas of the Body Can Be Treated by Chemical Peels?
A chemical peel is a non-invasive treatment that can be used on multiple areas of the body. These areas include the face, neck, chest, arms, back, and legs.
Good candidates for chemical peels are generally healthy individuals who would like to reduce signs of aging, diminish acne scarring, or correct skin concerns caused by sun exposure or other external factors. If you have dark skin, a chemical peel may not be right for you, since it has the potential to change your pigmentation. A chemical peel cannot be performed on wounded or sunburned areas on the skin. Patients who are currently pregnant or lactating, have a history of radiation therapy to the skin being treated, or who are allergic to the components of the peel should avoid chemical peels.
The producer takes 15 to 20 minutes. Before applying the chemical peel, skin is cleansed. The chemical peel solution is then applied evenly to the targeted area and left on to penetrate for a short time before it is removed. During this time, you may feel a heating or burning sensation of the skin.
Once the treatment is completed, you can leave the office right away. Skin will appear reddish following the treatment and last up to a couple of days. The downtime for this procedure is 5-7 days. You may experience peeling around day three or four. It is important to stay out of direct sunlight for the first few days after treatment. When outdoors, a minimum of SPF 30 should be applied. Frosting of the skin may occur during this time, leaving the skin whiter than normal.
Deeper chemical peel may cause more intense redness and some scabbing. Limit your activities for several days as the skin heals. Your skin will be very sensitive. Remember to apply ointment as directed and protect your skin from sun exposure.
After treatment skin should improve in overall tone and texture, creating an even complexion. To maintain the results, you should follow a skincare regimen that involves cleansing, exfoliating, and sun protection; you may also choose to repeat treatment every three to six months.
