What Is KYBELLA?

How Does KYBELLA Work?
KYBELLA is the trade name for ATX-101, a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule found in stomach acid in the intestines. Its main function is to help emulsify and metabolize fat. When injected, it disrupts cell membranes and destroys the fat cells in that tissue. The dead fat cells are then processed through the body and flushed out.
KYBELLA vs. Liposuction
In the past, liposuction was the only way to remove fat from the neck. Liposuction typically requires one treatment, while KYBELLA may take several sessions to achieve the desired result. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.
KYBELLA vs. Neck Lift
A neck lift utilizes incisions to remove excess skin and tissue from the neck and tightens the underlying muscle to define the jawline and neck. KYBELLA aims at fat reduction only.
KYBELLA can be used on patients 18 and older who are in good health and have good skin elasticity. It is safe to use on all ethnicities and skin types. Results will vary between patients based on skin condition and skin elasticity. Ideal candidates have pinchable fat underneath the chin. Women who are pregnant should avoid treatment during pregnancy and while breast-feeding.
Treatment takes about 30 minutes and is performed in office. The injection site is thoroughly cleaned and a marked grid is created under your chin. The grid is used as a reference for injections. Many patients will experience some burning as KYBELLA is injected. This burning sensation can last for a few hours. Icing, Tylenol, and Ibuprofen will improve this discomfort.
Slight swelling or redness are normal after treatment and will subside quickly on their own and with frequent icing. Over-the-counter pain medication, such as Ibuprofen, can alleviate post-treatment discomfort. Some may experience temporary numbness.
Results are not immediate since KEYBELLA works off your body’s natural metabolizing process. After three to four weeks following the treatment, results become more noticeable. Three to four sessions may be needed for full results to appear. The beautifully contoured results will last permanently as long you continually exercise and eat well to keep the surrounding areas slim.
