What Is a Facelift?
Our faces are how we present ourselves to the world. Gravity, sun exposure, facial expressions, genetics and emotions play a role in how our faces age. While we may be proud of our stories, we may not want the world to know our age. A facelift can provide you with the opportunity to improve the signs of aging. Let Dr. Bajaj help you regain your confidence.
A facelift, clinically known as rhytidectomy, is a procedure designed to correct the visible signs of aging that can appear on the face over time. This procedure involves removing excess skin and repositioning the underlying muscles and tissue to create a more youthful, contoured appearance. Facelifts are popular among both men and women of different ages and backgrounds.
There are a few different types of facelifts, depending on your concerns. They can vary from addressing mild sagging, like the mini facelift, to more involved procedures that correct mid-face issues, and, of course, the full facelift procedure. Dr. Bajaj will perform a consultation to find out which facelift technique is best your specific concerns.

Pre-Facelift Procedure Preparation
All patients who undergo a facelift will be asked to follow a list of instructions prior to surgery:
- Refrain from smoking four weeks before the procedure and continue to refrain from active nicotine and tobacco exposure for six weeks postoperatively.
- Maintain a healthy diet.
- Get plenty of sleep the night before the surgery.
- Fill and pick up all prescriptions prior to surgery.
- For your safety and comfort, you will need someone who can drive you home and spend that first night with you after surgery.
- Prior to surgery, you will need to wash your hair thoroughly to prevent any infections. (If you color your hair, you may wish to do this prior to surgery since it will be six weeks after your surgery before you will be able to color it again).
These, as well as any other specific instructions Dr. Bajaj provides you, will help to ensure safety and well-being during and after surgery.
Typically, the incisions begin above your ear, extend in front of your ear, and then behind your ear. Dr. Bajaj uses these incisions to remove and re-drape the excess skin from your face and neck. The underlying muscle layer is adjusted and lifted. The incisions will be closed with sutures – some of which will need to be removed and some of which will dissolve.
You may also have one or two drains which will be removed when you see Dr. Bajaj a day or two after surgery. Once the procedure is complete, you will be taken to the recovery room to be monitored by our knowledgeable medical staff until you are released to go home.
For certain patients, these procedures can be combined with a facelift.
Occasionally, individuals will not require a facelift, but rather some excision and tightening of the neck alone. A neck lift typically requires an incision behind the ears and underneath the chin.
A brow lift is performed on patients with drooping forehead skin or deep forehead creases, two concerns that are not addressed with a standard facelift. Brow lift incisions are made either along the hairline or eyebrows to effectively reposition tissue and remove lax skin. A facelift and brow lift performed together addresses the entire face.
Dr. Bajaj and her medical staff monitor patients after surgery. Bandages will be wrapped around your face and two small drains which will collect any accumulated fluid if necessary. The maintenance of these will be discussed and explained before a patient is released.
Most patients find that they are in less pain than they expected after a facelift surgery; however, pain medications are prescribed as needed to control any discomfort. Icing, head elevation, and the avoidance of strenuous activity are all recommended. Sun exposure and cigarettes should be avoided to help the healing.
Most of the sutures will be removed within a week of surgery. Some patients will experience mild swelling and bruising the first few weeks after surgery. Instructions are given on how to care for your dressings and incisions to help the healing process. Once dressings are removed, you may have some discoloration. Usually, bruising resolves within two weeks after facelift surgery, but it may take several months for all the swelling to resolve.
Scars will be hidden within the hairline and the natural contour of your face. They will start to fade after a few months and will continue to fade over time.
Generally, patients who have had a facelift will find that they look more refreshed and younger, and that they feel more confident.
During a facelift consultation, Dr. Bajaj will discuss your goals and expectations with you. She will also review your medical history, medications you are currently taking, and health issues that you may have. After considering your goals, she will perform a physical examination to determine whether a facelift will benefit you. Alternative procedures or treatments may be recommended if she does not think a facelift will achieve your goals. Since a facelift is such a versatile procedure and no two faces are alike, she will develop a customized plan for you.
Good Candidates for a Facelift
Good candidates for a facelift should be in good general health and wish to define their neckline, facial features, and tighten loose facial skin. A facelift will primarily address the contour of the mid and lower face. Patients who are concerned about the appearance of their eyes and forehead may wish to consider a blepharoplasty and/or brow lift.
