Attractiveness is measured by a number of characteristics, such as vibrancy of the eyes, smooth skin, and facial volume. Another important feature is the contour of the jawline. Kybella is a revolutionary treatment that gets rid of fat deposits underneath the chin to reveal a beautifully defined chin and youthful jawline.
What is Kybella?
The dreaded, unsightly double chin can make you look heavier and older than you really are. It can appear because of age, weight gain, or be hereditary. And despite your best efforts, it may be impossible to improve the area underneath the chin on your own with diet or exercise. You are not alone; an American Society for Dermatologic Surgery study showed 68% of men and women are frustrated with the appearance of their double chin.
Fortunately, recent advances in cosmetic technology have now made it possible to reduce the appearance of a double chin simply by “melting” the fat away. Kybella is the first and only FDA approved fat reduction injection specially designed to counter moderate to severe submental fat, or fat deposits under the chin. This state-of-the-art injectable offers a way to safely and effectively obtain a youthful jawline and defined chin without the need for surgery.
How Does Kybella Work?
Kybella, or the trade name for ATX-101, is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule found in stomach acid in the intestines. Its main function is to help emulsify and metabolize fat. When you inject this acid into the submental fat, it disrupts cell membranes and destroys the fat cells in that tissue. The dead fat cells are then processed through the body and naturally flushed out.
There have been numerous clinical studies with 2,500+ candidates to prove the effectiveness of this product for submental fat. Results are lasting since the fat cells in the area are destroyed. Kybella is not meant to act as a weight loss solution.
Before & After Photos
Kybella vs Liposuction
Kybella is a minimally invasive treatment, unlike liposuction which is a surgical procedure that may require anesthesia or sedation.
In the past, liposuction was the only way to remove fat from the neck. Now, both Kybella and liposuction can be used to diminish the appearance of a double chin, but they greatly differ from one another. However, liposuction typically requires only one treatment, while Kybella may take several sessions to achieve the desired result. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.
Kybella vs Neck Lift
Kybella and neck lifts aim to contour the same area, but do so by different means and resolve different conditions. Kybella is a minimally invasive treatment which does not require an incision or anesthesia. A neck lift utilizes incisions to remove excess skin and tissue from the neck and tightens the underlying muscle in order to define the jawline and neck.
The two procedures do not target the same underlying condition; one aims at fat reduction and the other skin excision and muscle tightening. Frequently, liposuction is also combined with a neck lift. Please schedule an in-person consultation with Dr. Bajaj to what treatment option is best for you.
Kybella vs Skin Tightening Lasers
Although Kybella and skin tightening lasers such as Ultherapy target the same area, they do not target the same conditions.
Kybella is used to address fat deposits underneath the skin, while skin tightening lasers merely lift and tighten sagging skin.
While skin tightening lasers will lift your skin, you may still have fat deposits that can be visible when the skin is tightened. Kybella on the other hand will reduce the submental fat, but will not tighten the skin past the point of your body’s own skin elasticity. That is why the best candidates for Kybella are patients who are not overweight, so they do not have a significant amount of excess skin. As stated above, both treat different conditions, so a consultation is necessary to find out the underlying cause of your double chin.
Kybella can be used on women and men who are 18 years or older, in good health, and have good skin elasticity. It is safe to use on all ethnicities and skin types. Results will vary between patients as everyone’s condition and skin elasticity is different. Ideal candidates have pinchable fat underneath the chin. Contraindications to Kybella are infection of the treatment area and pregnancy.
Some patients will require several treatment sessions, while others only need one; the amount is dependent on your desired results. One session can consist of up to 50 injections. During your consultation with Dr. Bajaj, she will evaluate you, and discuss how many injections and sessions you may need toreach your aesthetic goals.
It is important to understand what can be accomplished with this treatment. Kybella is an injectable that solely targets submental fat; skin laxity will not improve from this treatment alone. To address lax neck skin, a neck lift may be a better option for you, or can be performed in addition to your Kybella treatments. Furthermore, results will not be as dramatic for overweight patients as those who only have localized submental fat deposits.

As of now, Kybella is only approved for use on fat under the chin and does require extensive training. If a facial nerve is inadvertently injured, the patient’s smile may become asymmetrical;and if it’s not injected deep enough it can cause skin ulceration. For these reasons, it is important that you consult with a qualified physician.
A Kybella treatment will take about 30 minutes and is performed in the office. The specific spots where Kybella will be injected depends on the patient’s need and severity of the condition. The injection site is thoroughly cleaned, and a marked grid is created under your chin. Dr. Bajaj uses this as reference for the injection locations, and then appropriately injects the area-adjusted Kybella serum directly into the fat. Topical numbing cream is typically not needed, but can be applied if you wish. You can receive up to 50 injections during your session, depending on what is necessary to provide you with your desired results. Many patients will experiences some burning as the Kybella is injected. This burning sensation can last for a few hours. Icing will improve this discomfort.
Recovery / Results
You may experience slight swelling or redness, but these are normal occurrences and will subside quickly on their own and with frequent icing. Over-the-counter pain medication, such as ibuprofen, can alleviate post-treatment discomfort. Some may experience temporary numbness. Results are not immediate since it works off your body’s natural metabolizing process. You should be able to see a change 3-4 weeks following the treatment. Generally you are able to see good results after 2-3 sessions spread at least a month apart. Your beautifully contoured results will last permanently so long as you continually exercise and eat well to keep the surrounding areas slim; additional sessions can be done if necessary.
Although rare, there may be some side effects associated with your Kybella treatment. These may include injection site redness, bruising, swelling, temporary difficulty swallowing, slight discomfort, or numbness. These do not occur for all patients, and typically resolve with time. Pain medications and ice packs can help with any discomfort.
The price of your Kybella treatment is dependent on your specific case and how many sessions you will require to achieve optimal results. Dr. Bajaj will gladly give you an estimate quote after she evaluates you during a private consultation.
