What is Cellfina?
Cellfina™ is the only minimally invasive, FDA approved one-time treatment that improves the appearance of cellulite on the thighs and buttocks for at least two years. The advanced technology releases the subcutaneous tissue, or the connective bands, which cause dimpling, to soften the appearance of cellulite. The process also involves vacuum-like suction in attempt to aid in the smoothing of the skin to reach the connective bands more easily. Cellfina is not meant to be a weight loss solution, but will improve the textural irregularities of the buttocks and thighs. This treatment can be paired with other body contouring procedures.
What Exactly is Cellulite?
Warmer weather means skirts, shorts, and swimsuits; however, many women may be hesitant to reveal their legs because of a stubborn inconvenience called cellulite. Cellulite, or adiposis edematosa, is the dimpling effect on the skin of the thighs and buttocks due to herniation of subcutaneous fat in fibrous tissue. These connective fibers located right underneath the skin’s surface pull down on the skin, creating a dimpled appearance.
Cellulite is often categorized into 3 different grades:
- Grade 1: There are no clinical symptoms, but anatomical changes of cells can be detected from a microscopic examination.
- Grade 2: Cellulite is visible when skin is pasty in color or in low temperatures, and can also be detected by microscopic examination.
- Grade 3: There is visible roughness of the skin, along with Grade 1 & Grade 2 symptoms.
There are many causes of cellulite, including hormonal changes, slow metabolism, lack of physical activity, genetics, or the thickness of your skin. Cellulite also worsens with age as women’s bodies produce less estrogen, which helps with blood flow. Poor blood circulation can lead to a decrease in the production of collagen and breakdown of old connective tissue.
Cellulite can be apparent on both thin and larger women. It is a common misconception that larger women have more noticeable cellulite, but it can be apparent on women of any size and shape. The more fat underneath your skin, the more likely there will be more stress on your connective tissue. Even the most lean women can still experience stubborn cellulite dimples that do not go away with diet or exercise.
However, Cellulite is only apparent in women. Men do not experience this because their fibrous tissue pattern lays flat against the muscle. Women have vertical fibrous tissue which is more prone to cellulite formation since it pulls down on the skin.
How Does Cellfina Work?
This highly advanced technology allows for precision when using subcision to access the structural problem causing cellulite.
Cellfina uses a sterile, single-use disposable kit to treat connective bands intertwined within the fat that pulls on the skin, creating dimples on the surface of the skin. The specialized hand-held device uses subcision to force these connective bands to fray and release, allowing the skin to relax and smooth itself in about 3 days. This can be compared to a rubber band being stretched; when released, it returns to its normal relaxed state. A Cellfina treatment should not cause increased skin laxity.
Cellfina vs Liposuction & Other Fat Removal Procedures
Before Cellfina, little could be done to eliminate cellulite other than a healthy diet and exercise; and these treatments still only diminish its appearance. Liposuction and other similar procedures will eliminate fat deposits; however, they do not solve the underlying problem that causes cellulite. Many times liposuction may actually worsen the appearance of cellulite as the removal of fat causes more dimpling of the skin. Cellfina is the only long-term, FDA approved method of actually addressing the underlying structural cause of cellulite.
Cellfina vs “Cellulite Removing” Skin Creams
Most women have probably heard that certain creams can get rid of cellulite; unfortunately this is a myth. No topical cream, prescription or over-the-counter, has been proven to permanently reduce the appearance of cellulite. Retinol has been shown to provide temporary relief by creating thicker skin, but this is merely camouflage. Some compare the use of retinol, caffeine, or green tea based creams for the treatment of cellulite as putting icing on an uneven cake. However, there is limited evidence that these creams can provide good long-term results for cellulite removal. The only way to confidently eliminate cellulite is to address its structural cause, which Cellfina does.
Areas on the Body That Can Be Treated
Cellfina is designed to be used on cellulite located on:
- Upper thighs
- Lower thighs
As of now, these are the only approved treatment areas on the body. The number of depression sites treated will depend on the patient’s size and the severity of depressions.
Ideal candidates for Cellfina treatment are healthy women who have cellulite depressions in the thighs or buttocks. Contraindications may include an active skin infection, varicose veins on the treatment area, diabetes, pregnancy, taking blood thinning medications, and morbid obesity.
During your private consultation with board certified and licensed plastic surgeon Dr. Anu Bajaj, you will discuss your problem areas on your thighs and buttocks. She will then perform a thorough examination and assess if you are a candidate for Cellfina.
Dr Bajaj will address all of your questions and concerns gladly. Dr. Bajaj highly advocates an open line of communication between herself and her patients and believes that her staff will make you feel as comfortable as possible throughout your treatment process.
When preparing for your treatment, it is important to follow all instructions that you receive to ensure beautiful, lasting results.
- Anti-inflammatory medications and herbal supplements should be discontinued 2 weeks prior to your treatment as well as after because they increase the amount of bleeding.
- You should bathe with an antibacterial soap the day of the procedure.
- You will receive a prescription for an antibiotic which you should take prior to your procedure. You may also receive a prescription for pain medication or an anti-anxiety medication.
- You will be awake for the procedure. However, most women experience little pain or discomfort during the procedure. If you take pain medication prior to the procedure, you will require someone who can drive you home.
Further individual instructions may be given depending on your specific case.
The procedure will take between 1-2 hours and is performed in the office. On the day of your procedure, Dr. Bajaj will the dimpled spots on the thighs and buttocks. Both of you will review on the areas and dimples that are being treated. After the areas are properly marked, the skin is cleaned and prepped with betadine.
Once the procedure begins, the skin is suction-stabilized to make the area taut so as to reach the fibrous tissue with ease. A local anesthetic, typically lidocaine, is administered to the treatment areas to numb the skin, making the process more comfortable. The pocket-sized Cellfina handpiece is then used on the taut areas, which through subcision reaches the pulled fibrous tissue just below the skin and cuts and releases them, relaxing the treatment area. Sterile gauze pads are held on the treatment sites with bandaging or compression garment following the procedure.
This efficient process takes no longer than an hour, and is able to release about 25 cellulite dimples in one session, significantly improving appearance. Patients are able to go about their day just as they would normally. Some patients opt to take it easy for the remainder of the day, but there is no downtime required and you are able to return to work. Results can be seen in as little as 3 days and remain evident for 2 years after your treatment.
Some patients may experience slight discomfort, but this can easily be controlled with common acetaminophen. A compression garment will be placed around your buttocks and thighs, and should be worn for the first two weeks post-treatment. You may experience some drainage from the incision sites for the first 24 hours as well. There will be some bruising and swelling which will resolve for the most part within the first 2-3 weeks. You may also experience minimal discomfort only when pressure is applied on the treatment site for the first month. Most women should be able to resume full normal activities following the first week. You may feel some firm areas on the treatment site; these areas can be treated with a firm massage with your fingertips several times daily until the area becomes fully relaxed.
Final results from a Cellfina treatment are visible within 3 days after your treatment and last for 2 years. This is the longest FDA cleared duration for the treatment of cellulite. Almost all patients are the most satisfied at roughly the 6 month mark, while majority are satisfied at 3 months. Some patients have reported their results lasting longer than 2 years. Cellfina provides women of all shapes and sizes beautifully smooth legs and buttocks with assurance of lasting results.
