Many men and women choose Botox (or other botulinum toxins) for treating their facial lines and wrinkles.
What is Botulinum Toxin Type A?
Our skin can tell the stories of our lives – our laugh lines, frown lines, and time spent in the sun can leave us with deep creases or wrinkles. Life should be enjoyed to the fullest without the worry of wrinkle repercussions; botulinum toxin type A is designed just for that.
Botox is a non-surgical aesthetic enhancement for fine lines and wrinkles, as well as a quick cure for some minor physical irritations such as muscle spasms, excessive sweating, vascular spasms in the hand. Botox Cosmetic and Xeomin are trade names for botulinum toxin type A, a neurotoxin which relaxes overactive muscles. It works by temporarily paralyzing muscle movement, in turn smoothing wrinkles that are caused by muscle movement. The injectable works similarly for physical conditions, calming the muscles responsible for the irritation.
Botox has been used for cosmetic purposes for the past 15 years. To learn more information, request a Botox consultation today with Dr. Anureet Bajaj to turn back the years while still keeping those great memories.
Botox Cosmetic is designed to address facial lines and wrinkles on the face, neck, and decolletage. The most common cosmetic uses for Botox include:
- Frown lines: Lines that form between the brows from furrowing them.
- Crow’s feet: Fine lines around the eyes caused by squinting or smiling.
- Forehead lines: Lines across the forehead from lifting the brows.
Botox and Xeomin are able to address certain physical conditions such as the following:
- Excessive sweating
- Muscle spasms
- Gummy smile
How Does Botulinum Toxin Work?
Botox achieves wrinkle reduction by addressing the underlying cause: continuous facial muscle movement.
Overactive muscles create dynamic wrinkles which are produced from facial expressions such as smiling, squinting, or frowning. Over time, static wrinkles become the result; these are wrinkles that appear on the face when it is at rest. Wrinkles can also be caused by different factors such as age, reduction in collagen production, or sun exposure.
The injectable contains a purified neurotoxin which temporarily reduces muscle activity. By injecting Botox into a muscle, the neurotoxin interrupts the nerve communication emitted from that muscle, reducing its activeness and in turn letting the skin above relax and soften wrinkles.
The same science can be used for physical irritations like excessive sweating. When the specialized solution is injected into the armpit, the nerve communication coming from the sweat glands is blocked, thus reducing its activeness and in turn less sweat. This does not cause sweat to go anywhere else, it simply does not get produced to the extent it previously was.
Botox and Xeomin are temporary solutions, so in order to enjoy lasting results, patients can come in for regular injections every 3-6 months. Many individuals are very satisfied with their Botox results and come in for routine treatments with injection specialist Dr. Bajaj.
Fillers vs Botulinum Toxin
Fillers and Botox are both non-surgical procedures that treat facial wrinkles, but how they accomplish this differs. Fillers quite literally fill in deep creases on the surface to smooth wrinkles, while Botox addresses the underlying cause of creases and wrinkles. Dermal fillers are an injectable solution made with hyaluronic acid, a naturally found substance in the body. As we age, our hyaluronic acid levels begins to deplete, so fillers act as a replacement. Fillers do not have impact on underlying muscles.
Only certain fillers are designed for wrinkle reduction, while others are designed to add facial volume to areas such as the cheeks, under the eyes, and lips. Those who only want to focus on wrinkle reduction can benefit greatly from Botox injections, but the two treatments can be performed simultaneously for stunning youthful results.
What Makes Botox & Xeomin Unique?
- Botulinum toxin is the only approved wrinkle treatment to temporarily diminish moderate to severe crow’s feet and frown lines.
- Botox toxin is a well-studied for aesthetic puposes.
- Xeomin is a highly purified botulinum toxin; all accessory proteins are removed with a proprietary process in order to leave only the purest solution.
- Botox is used in 78 countries; and in the United States alone, almost 11 million vials have been used since 2002.
- No two neurotoxin products are alike since they all vary in potency and formulation.
Candidates for Botox are women and men wanting to diminish fine lines and wrinkles or address a physical irritation. Botox is a great solution for those wanting to regain a more youthful appearance without undergoing a surgical procedure. Xeomin is an ideal solution for those suffering from muscle spasms or eye twitches. There are no serious contraindications, but potential candidates should not be pregnant, breastfeeding, or have preexisting muscular or nerve damage, and you should be 18 years or older and in good general health.
Your Botox journey begins with an initial consultation with Oklahoma Botox and Xeomin specialist Dr. Anureet Bajaj. She will examine your areas of concerns and conclude which botulinum toxin injectable is the right treatment for you. Alternative treatments will be suggested if she thinks they would provide better results for your aesthetic desires. If Dr. Bajaj determines you are a candidate, she will determine the amount of injections per treatment area that will give you the desired aesthetic outcome. Every question is important, so please do not hesitate to inquire about anything that comes to mind.
Botox Treatment Process
Before your Botox treatment, your skin will be cleansed at the treatment site. A numbing agent is not required but available for those who want additional comfort during the injection. Plastic surgeon Dr. Bajaj will inject a specific amount of Botox into the muscle beneath the wrinkle to be treated. The deeper and more severe the wrinkle, the larger the dose of Botox that must be used to treat that area. When the Botox solution enters the muscle, it blocks the communication between the nerves and the muscle. This limits the contraction of the muscle. Over a period of several days with minimal movement, the wrinkled skin will begin to smooth out.
There is no magic number of Botox injections; it varies for each individual. The amount is based on the treatment area, severity of the wrinkles, patient gender, and patient age. After your initial consultation with Dr. Bajaj she will be able to determine the appropriate amount of injections, as well as a time frame for when you should return for a touch up treatment.
Why Experience Matters
Botox is a neurotoxin which temporarily paralyzes the muscle, which means it is a technique-sensitive cosmetic treatment. It should not affect the ability to make facial expressions if injected by an experienced professional. Dr. Anu Bajaj is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and well trained in properly administering Botox injections. She has mastered the facial anatomy, making sure to provide each patient with natural-looking results. Her skill and expertise has helped countless patients achieve the youthful results they desire.
While injections of botulinum toxin can effectively diminish fine lines and wrinkles caused by muscle movement, it cannot address sagging skin or loss of facial volume. Complementing procedures may include fillers, a facelift, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), or chemical peels.
Recovery & Results
When you leave our practice following your treatment, you can expect little to no downtime. You will, however, need to remain upright for about six hours and avoid alcohol and exercise during this time. Please do not apply pressure or massage the injection sites for 24 hours.
It’s not uncommon to experience some redness of the injection site or a slight headache. Let Oklahoma City plastic surgeon Dr. Bajaj know if any side effects you experience worsen or linger for more than a day or so.
About four to eight days after your treatment with either Botox or Xeomin, you will begin to see the wrinkle-diminishing effects. The benefits of your treatment can last several months. As the effects begin to wear off, you may choose to return to Dr. Bajaj’s practice for follow-up treatments with either Botox or Xeomin.
