The Silicone vs. Saline Debate

When it comes to breast augmentation, one of the first decisions you will have to make is which type of implant you should choose? Here is some information to help you make the choice.

IMPLANT MATERIAL

Strangely enough, both silicone and saline implants are constructed with a silicone outer shell. The difference between the two lies in what each is filled with.

Saline implants get their name from the sterilized saltwater solution that they are filled with. Interestingly enough, saline implants are actually inserted into the breast while empty and then filled once they are in place.

Silicone implants are inserted into the breast pre-filled with silicone gel. The silicone gel is intended to closely mimic the texture and consistency of natural human fat.

SAFETY

Both saline and silicone implants have been approved by the FDA and have not been associated with connected tissue disease, breast cancer, or reproductive issues. Both implant types have also been approved for revision surgeries as well. Although silicone implants were banned in the ‘90s, they have actually been redeemed with a recent FDA approval.

One key difference between the two implants is the ages that they are intended for. Saline implants have been approved for patients 18 and older, whereas the minimum approved age for silicone implants is 22. However, both are approved for breast reconstruction for women of any age.

Some advantages that set saline implants apart from silicone are that they are more cost effective, safer and easier to detect in case of rupture, leave less noticeable scars, and are more effective in submuscular placement.

One of the main reasons women often choose silicone implants is because many believe that they provide for a more natural look and feel. Silicone implants are also less prone to rippling or wrinkling and are effective when placed closer to the skin surface in subglandular placement.
