Women Watching her tummy

One of the biggest misconceptions about the Tummy Tuck is that it is a substitute for weight loss. Physicians have been telling their patients for years that abdominoplasty, or the tummy tuck, is strictly for sculpting your body and removing the excess skin that may be present after weight loss or childbirth. A new study reveals that while the tummy tuck is still primarily for contouring it may actually help you maintain or lose weight after your procedure is performed.

A recent study shows that patients who had a tummy tuck actually reported increased satiety. Satiety is the measure of how full you feel after a certain amount of food during a meal. A majority of patients during the study felt fuller while eating less after their tummy tuck procedure.

In addition to feeling full faster after a tummy tuck, the study showed that patients who had more fat removed with liposuction during their procedure continued to lose weight. The removal of fatty tissue, which can contain hormones that drive your appetite up, resulted in less of an appetite. The more fat tissue removed during the procedure the more the patients reported feeling less of an appetite post-surgery. Researchers believe the removal of this tissue is responsible for the decrease in appetite and the increase in satiety.

If you are considering a tummy tuck it is important to discuss your options with your physician. While this exciting study adds to the benefits of having Abdominoplasty it does not change the intended outcome for a tummy tuck. This procedure should still not be considered for weight loss purposes.
