Arm Yourself With Confidence

Loose, dangling upper arm skin is a common concern for many individuals. Targeting the dreaded “bat wing”, Brachioplasty gives your arms a thinner, more toned appearance. Brachioplasty, more commonly known as an arm lift, removes excess skin from the upper arm. At Bajaj Plastic Surgery, Brachioplasty has been an ever-popular procedure. Dr. Anu Bajaj was recently quoted in New You Magazine, explaining that more men and women are opting for an arm lift as they have become increasingly “aware that we can treat excess skin on the upper arm”.
Age, genetics, or substantial weight loss can leave the upper arm area tired and sagging. Lax skin impairs its ability to naturally spring back. While not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle, an arm lift firms and contours the upper arm. It is important that you maintain a healthy weight for at least six months prior to your surgery—or, as Dr. Bajaj points out, “results won’t be as good”. Also, keep in mind that although Brachioplasty will create leaner arms, muscle tone is dependent on you: “the only way to get that is through exercise”.
Procedure
When needed, Dr. Bajaj may perform liposuction prior to your Brachioplasty. Liposuction rids the upper arm of superfluous fat that could prevent your arms from looking their slimmest. Making an incision along the underarm, Dr. Bajaj will remove loose skin and tissues that cause arms to sag. Depending on the amount of excess skin present, Brachioplasty can be performed with varying degrees. The length of the incision is determined by the type of Brachioplasty you choose:
Limited or Mini:
- A little excess skin
- A small incision near the armpit suffices
Standard:
- Moderate excess skin
- Incision travels from the armpit to the elbow
Extended:
- Excess skin is not limited to the arm, but is also present out in the outer area of the chest, commonly referred to as the “bra bulge”
- In addition to an incision made from the armpit to the elbow, an incision is also placed down the side of the chest wall
The procedure itself takes 90 minutes, 3 hours, and 5 hours respectively.
Recovery
As a more invasive surgery, it is important to have a post-operative plan in place. As your activities will be limited, make sure to have someone to assist and help you for a few days. Dr. Bajaj will provide you with a compression garment—this must be worn for several weeks. During this time, it is wise to keep your arms elevated. Swelling and discomfort can be expected. It is important not to push yourself throughout your recovery—you do not want to stress or strain your arms. Typically, general recovery lasts two to four weeks and you can resume your exercise routine after six to eight weeks.
Brachioplasty & You
Are you a good candidate for Brachioplasty? Chances are good that you are. According to Dr. Bajaj, a good candidate is someone who is “healthy, doesn’t have medical problems such as heart disease and diabetes, and is a non-smoker”.
