Surgery to Remove Skin Cancer Lesions

Skin cancers like basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas are a common problem for men and women of Oklahoma. They can appear on any sun-exposed body part, and may be deadly if they aren't caught early enough.

Plastic surgeons remove cancerous growths, often from the face or neck, while minimizing aesthetic defects that can occur from the tissue removal. If you have a skin cancer lesion, you should consider treatment with Dr. Anu Bajaj in Oklahoma City.

Skin Cancer Surgery is Best For:

  • Basal cell carcinomas
  • Squamous cell carcinomas
  • Malignant melanomas

Commonly removed skin cancers include basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. These can usually be surgically removed in a relatively simple outpatient procedure. Malignant melanoma, a more dangerous type of skin cancer, will require different treatment.

Skin Cancer Treatment in Oklahoma City

Men and women of all ages can get skin cancers, especially those with fair skin, light hair and blue eyes. Fortunately, surgical removal is usually quick and minimally invasive. However, the procedure does have the potential to leave visible scars. If you suspect skin cancer, a physician can identify symptoms and a biopsy can confirm if it is cancer.

What to Expect:

During skin cancer surgery, Dr. Bajaj makes an incision around the affected tissue, removing it before directly closing the incision. Depending on the size and location of the lesion, the technique will be modified. Dr. Bajaj will attempt to conceal surgical scars in your natural tissue contours.

Recovery:

After surgery, Dr. Bajaj will apply a bandage, which you should plan on wearing for about ten days. Within one week, sutures are typically removed. Your recovery time will depend on the location of the skin cancer, extent of the removal, the size of the defect prior to surgery, as well as the amount of tension and type of closure.

Remember to minimize your risk of skin cancer by protecting your skin. Use sunscreen, hats and clothing that covers your skin when you are outdoors. Skin cancers may occur years after sun exposure, but taking action now can help minimize your risk.
